Yeah I've been doing a similar thing for Tails. I just kinda got the ripped model from Model's Resource and kinda just rolled with it. Also great job on the mod!

How can you use mesh states using the character template to for example change a characters mouth expressions depending on if they die or get a star or are idle?
well thats how you have to make it so. I'm new too so I don't know the ins and outs.

all the ins and outs I mean I'd just reccomend looking through the documentation, and when you have a grip with it, add your character. Thats what I did for my mod I made recently.

I have a question? How do you add your own character models to Mario's Armature? Because I don't understand how I add my own character model instead of Mario to export.
Could you guys also consider making video tutorials similar to something Make Your First Mod or something? I feel like it would help people like me have a good grasp about all the different functions and stuff.
