[CS] Kirby Deluxe! - Play as Kirby with a KatFL-inspired moveset!

Play as the pink puffball warrior in SM64 Co-op DX with a moveset directly inspired by Kirby and the Forgotten Land (2022), made to align within Kirby's N64 era!

This mod features:
  • Copy abilities in the form of the base game's power-ups, with Copy Ability Essences replacing the cap models!
  • Custom objects for the Air and Star bullets!
  • "Normal" and "Classic" costumes!
  • A host-only configuration that allows Kirby to puff up...

Very fun moveset, and I can tell how much effort went into all this! But I definitely think there's a few things that could be improved upon here.

Kirby feels a tad sluggish. Naturally I'm not expecting him to be the next Sonic, but lacking movement options like the dive and long jump really makes moving around some levels a bit dull. The slide jump helps a bit (Adore the touch of sliding off a ledge to get a good bit of air speed, love that) but it's not quite enough IMO. The most Kirby-like solution I could think of is giving him a "sprint" by double tapping the stick? Since he lacks a side flip and a number of other jump options, I don't think it would really get in the way of anything. Some powerups could also give him better movement options (burning from eating fire?), but naturally adding more game powerups would be a WAY bigger undertaking. But food for thought, literally.

On a much easier note, being able to re-puff up after releasing air would be great, like how Forgotten Land does it. Muscle memory of being able to do that keeps messing me up, and would be a little bit more of a movement option in the air that would be nice to have.

Would also be nice if the ground bounce from falling high up was a little less strict on the height. For no other reason other than it's satisfying, haha.

Still a blast to play, and I'll absolutely be keeping him in my character rotation!

Definitely agree with this guy. One other minor thing imo is that wall-bonking still being a thing, even though Kirby can't wall jump, is a little annoying. It's not like, it's totally obstructive, but it's still a little bit annoying. Similarly, needing to be standing still in order to crouch-dodge-roll makes it less smooth than it does in Forgotten Land proper. I don't think giving Kirby the "witch time" mechanic of said dodge would be necessary though; sounds painful to program anyways.

One review mentioned that the swimming can be changed in an update, and I agree with that too. Maybe when Kirby is right atop the water's surface, he can use his floatie ring and jump/act freely out of it, like in Forgotten Land (iirc). Not fully sure how the underwater swimming can be changed besides Kirby wearing some goggles like he does in some of the 2D games, though. lol

Besides that? This is a damn good moveset mod, and I adore how expressive Kirby is, even for random things like talking to npcs. I look forward to seeing updates for this!

Loving this mod and plan to leave a proper review later, but I've been experiencing a few issues in 1.0:

1. Crashes (likely related to floating since that's been the most frequent circumstance, if not the only one, in which this happens)
2. Spat projectiles halt and linger mid-air (ledges and likely invisible walls, I've found)

I also don't know if you're supposed to be invincible while inhaling (I've tested this with rolling balls, goombas, bob-ombs, and the chain chomp), but it feels a little cheaty...

I find the crashes very concerning, so I'm going to need a few more details, if you don't mind;
  • What type of crash was it? A "(Not Responding)" crash where the game window becomes white? A "... has Script Errors!" type thing? Or does it show the Co-op DX crash screen?
    • If it's either the second or third, then, is it possible for you to take a screenshot/copy-paste the error?
  • Could you recite the events prior to the crash? Like, what were you doing before the crash, just to know where and when they happened.

funkymonkeyjay updated [CS] Kirby Deluxe! with a new update entry:

It's a "Not Responding" sort of crash. There aren't any other factors to the crashes that I'm immediately aware of: it seems to happen about anywhere I've played, in vanilla SM64 and in Star Road alike, as long as Kirby's cheeks are puffed. I don't recall doing anything in particular before they occur. I'm going to play around and record the locations in which this happens should it depend where I am at the time.

I should also mention that my laptop is lower-end, and I don't really have any other working devices to play as of right now.

So I am trying to find the API I cant find it anywhere
You can find it in the description of the mod in the "Overview" tab, listed under "_G.kirbyInhaleHookBehavior" and "_G.kirbyInhaleEditBehavior", everything else you need is there.

The inhale doesent work when im next to goomba or block or anything shown in the trailer its like im not even inhaling what should i do?

Hey, I'm having problems getting the inhale to work properly. I think something may be messed up in the code to where a variable or multiple variables have been altered and Kirby's inhale is only affecting specific enemies. I noticed that the small Bully enemies could be inhaled sometimes, but not ones associated with stars. Maybe it has something to do with the way the onEatFunc is set up? I don't know.

This may have to do with balancing. Not even in Kirby's own games can he inhale certain enemies, standard or boss.

Personally, I think the small bullies shouldn't be edible for Kirby. It feels too cheesy, especially when you can still push them back without punching or kicking: slide-kicking, ground pounding, or even just descending from a jump is sufficient. Snufits being unaffected by the inhale also confuses me, but spitting their own bullets back at them is funny.

You might need to make changes yourself if you want Kirby to inhale enemies not native to vanilla SM64, though, such as Star Road's shy guys.

great moveset

i was thinking he could add simple abilities like bomb, or sword, or hammer. nothing complex. idk if he would be able to make it so swallowing an enemy gives you that ability, i was thinking more of a palette, like milky way wishes, where you can select them.
Don't double post! Use that edit button! Post automatically merged:

idea: but i think actual copy abilities wouldn't hurt tbh. it would pretty cool to use the following abilities. here's some ideas.

Bomb: when used, can be like forgotten land, where you can choose how far to throw it, can also have a palette for skins, either color wise, classic, like super star, or like how the bombs appear in forgotten land or rtdl, with the stars on them.

B: throw a bomb

Z + B: Bowling Bomb.

L: Time Bomb: must be close to an enemy.

Hold B: giant bomb, throwing it releases a massive explosion killing multiple enemies.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hammer: Also can have palettes like bomb. classic as well. has the ability to pound stakes into the ground.

B: Hammer swing, can be used in rapid sucession. also in midair.

Z + B: Hammer ground pound. creates a shockwave like Bowsers jump in the final battle, killing any enemies, also stuns them.

Hold L: Hammer Flip. does damage to large enemies notably, but slows movement.

Hold B: Hammer spin, must be running while doing so, must be held to maintain move, releasing it stops the ability.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike: More of a simple ability. figured i'd throw it in cause why not

B: Stand Megaphone

L: Desk Mike:

Z + B: Stand Mike. each attack Kills enemies in a radius.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sword: Palettes allow for either classic style or different colors.

B: overhead slash, Sword beam, full health, press b rapidly to do multisword attack, jump in the air to do chop thrust, press b in midair to do down thrust. run to do drill stab when pressing b.

hold b for spin slash.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fire:

B: Fire breath, like forgotten land, can move similar to inhaling, but slowly.

Dash and B: dashes forward, for about 3 to 4 seconds, can Do Fireball spin in midair.

Fireball Inferno: Hold B

Grants slight immunity to lava.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plasma: Palettes allow for color changes

Works similar to Air ride. Press the b button different times to charge up the ability. then again to use each attack.

Plasma Needle: 2 charges.

Plasma Arrow: 3-6 Charges.

Plasma Spark: 7-9 Charges.

Plasma Laser: 10-15 Charges.

Plasma Wave: Fully Charged.

Plasma Spray: Small Flurry of bolts.

Plasma Zap: 2 rounds of small plasma bolts:

Plasma Comets: 3 strong comets which go across the ground.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cutter: Color palettes for Cutter as well.

Cutter Boomerang: B, basic Cutter Throw attack. Functions like forgotten land.

Cutter Dash: Dash + Z: basic dash attack like in super star ultra

Sweep Cutter: Hold B in midair.

Cutter Drop: Down B in midair

Hold Z: Hyper Boomerang: can bounce off surfaces, but dissapears after a while.

Final Cutter, near opponent: Z Rapidly next to foe.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parasol: Palettes allow for color changing:

Parasol Swing: Press B, Swing the Parasol infront of you.

Parasol: Dive: Press Z in midair to dive down:

Parasol Shield: Hold B: Can block projectiles, and bowsers fire.

Parasol Drill: Kirby Drills forward and if the opponent is hit, Dash forward and press b to do this, kirby will twirl them up in the air performing circus throw.

Parasol Spin: Press Z: Spin the Parasol infront of you.

falling with this ability will have kirby slowly drift downards, which can be controlled.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice: also has palettes for the headgear color.

move forward or W on pc: ice skate:

Ice breath: Z: Freezes enemies, allows for said enemies once frozen to be picked up and thrown or knocked forward.

Ice Sprinkle: B in midair, spin in a circle, freezing anything that touches it.

Super ice sprinkle: same thing but while dashing.

Ice Storm: Surrounds kirby in a ice shield that freezes anything. dash and hold B or Z to do so.

Ice ball: dash then press Z or B to perform it.

also Grants immunity to the ice on the 2nd ice level.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fighter: Palettes for the headband can also be selected. each attack can be spammed if button combinations are pressed together.

Quick jab: B

Vulcan Jab: B B Or Z Z rapidly. locks an enemy into combo until the attack is done.

Rising Break: upprcuts enemies, perfomed by pressing up then B Or Z

Sky kick: Down B during jump Or Z. great for flying enemies.

Giga force Blast: Hold B or Z, will keep traveling until it hits an enemy, similar to the Star spit:

kick: move and press B or Y.

Judo throw: B or Z near Foe, then press the arrow keys or the movement keys. Same for Arm throw, but throws them forward.

Down kick: B in midair.

Double kick: hold B in midair.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tornado: once again, color palettes for the tornado on kirbys head.

Tornado attack: Pressing B allows kirby to turn into a tornado and move around quickly, like forgotten land, it can gather enemies, and shoot them out.

Big Tornado (based off battle royale, but with changes) B + Z. This is Slightly buffed from Battle Royales, it has 3 levels of charge, in that its a bit larger, as in, it covers a pretty large space, and can suck throwable objects and enemies, then spit them out much further. kirby can move slightly while this is happening and floats at a leisurly pace, until the attack wears off. for players, this can suck them in and spit them out similar to the tornado on shifting sand land, only this one doesn't make them fly, it launches them far away, causing fall damage when they land.

level 1 is similar to battle royale, not that big, slightly pulls in objects, does damage.

level 2: slightly bigger, has a stronger pull, and can throw players if they happen to get caught.

level 3: biggest charge. it can cover a good area of the map, and can pull players from a good distance.

Tornado dash: B + B, dash forward

Tornado Spit: Z + B, kirby spits a tornado at the opponent, trapping them in a mini tornado that sends them flying everywhere, they have no control. each hit does damage.

additional items: Invincible Candy, Found randomly throughout the map. Grants immunity to anything.

maxim tomato, heals all health.

and That's all the idea's i have, for now! :D
