On Topic:
I'm honestly curious as to why users would prefer to play as a certain character.

In my case: when I was younger, I felt bad that Luigi - compared to Mario - wasn't as popular (this is back in the early 2000s).
While I've nothing against Mario - or anyone else, for that matter - I still prefer to play as Luigi when given the opportunity.
