What's the difference between DynOS and Skin Swapping Mods?

Dynamic Options System or DynOS is a patch that makes the game more user-friendly and customizable by reading external files and turning them into in-game content and was added by PeachyPeach for the PC Port around 2020. This allowed users to add their own characters in, edit general models and/or textures.

There's a key factor that makes DynOS different from mods such as Character Select by Squishy.

DynOS allows you to add all of your changes onto the game without the need for the host to apply it. HOWEVER, all of these changes are visible only to YOU and your screen. Not only that, DynOS models require the bin file named after an existing file in the game to replace, such as mario_geo. Any bin file that's original will not work. If your model is named an existing character's file, it will not only override your player model, but other player models as well.

Here's an example:

Mods such as Skin Swapper or Character Select are made to target on your model globally. So if you were to add a skin swap mod such as Character Select's VL Luigi + Cjes Luigi, and if you were to select a character skin, that skin will affect you and the others, AND the your chosen skin will be seen by other players AND you. The bin files can also be whatever names you apply it such as vl_luigi_geo.

The only downsides are, is a little extra work using lua to have the characters be added to mods such as Character Select AND that the host must be the one to have your characters added.

Hope this helps explain things!
