Put bowser in throwing state without putting him in the grab state first

I've tried setting m.held_object to bowser first then mario_throw_held_object(m) but it puts bowser in a grabbed state first for a second then throws him.
I've tried cur_obj_get_thrown_or_placed() but I don't think it works in this context.
