Problems with play between windows and Mac?

Trying to get a game running with some friends and one of them is playing Mac. Every time he tries to connect to a server a windows user opens he gets an error that he can't join the game and that the server was closed. Same thing happens when he hosts and we try to join him. Does this have to do with an issue with crossplay between the 2 systems or are we just really unlucky and keep running into some weird bug? Any help is appreciated, ty in advanced!

Crossplay should work fine between macOS and windows. Check the firewall in Network in the macOS settings app, and ensure sm64coopdx is allowed (if the firewall is on), otherwise it should work fine.
