Hey guys,
I've been playing this game with my friends recently. I added a lot of Mario characters as mods and gave them custom stats and stuff. However, this quickly became a problem because the large volume of characters (plus unique stats and abilities) became overwhelming and overpowered, so I had to find a solution. I decided to pair each character with an achievement in the game like getting a certain star or defeating Bowser for the first time.
This has added a really cool element to the game, and I think it would be awesome if it were actually built into the gameplay. I've put some thought into how this could work and made some concept art to show what it might look like. There are a few ways I can think of doing this, but here is my favorite idea below.
Mario character mods are in the character select screen, but as "locked characters" and only appear as silhouettes:
They are all NPCs hidden throughout the game (the same way Toads and Bob-omb Buddies are). Each character has a "quest" you have to do (e.g. Bowser Junior needs you to beat Bowser for the first time, King Penguin needs you to return the baby penguin to its mother, Daisy needs you to beat her score on the slide, etc.):
Once you've finished the quest and/or talked to the NPC, you unlock the character to play as:
I can do all the mapping, dialogue, and any general design/art stuff, but don't have the coding skills to create this. What I've described is what I would want to start with, but in a perfect world it could become a much larger mod with new boss fights to unlock the enemy characters, trading power stars for pets, purchasing skins with coins, etc. I have a lot of ideas and would love to make a "SM64 Coop SUPER Deluxe", but we'll save that idea for another day. If anyone is interested in helping me, send me a message @vagetv on Discord. Also feel free to add additional suggestions or questions in the comments.
